VENEERS
Veneers are a dental procedure in which a covering is placed over the outside (visible area) of the tooth. Veneers are usually only done to the part of the teeth that are visible when talking or smiling.

The indirect technique usually involves two appointments because the veneers will be fabricated at a dental laboratory. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions taken, and the teeth are given a temporary covering. In two to three weeks the veneers are back from the laboratory, the temporaries are removed and the veneers are bonded to the teeth. The laboratory fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic, and are esthetically pleasing and natural.

The advantage of veneers versus crowns is that veneers are much more conservative whereby more natural tooth structure is preserved.

Veneers are indicated when one wants to change the shape, color and occasionally position of their teeth to improve or rejuvenate their smile.

SLEEP MEDICINE
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a very common and potentially life-threatening medical disorder that prevents airflow during sleep. Millions of Americans have sleep apnea, and many are untreated.

Sleep apnea occurs when tissue in the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airway, reducing the amount of oxygen delivered to all of your organs including your heart and brain. People with sleep apnea may snore loudly and stop breathing for short periods of time. When the blood-oxygen level drops low enough, the body momentarily wakes up. It can happen so fast that you may not be aware you woke up. This can happen hundreds of times a night, and you may wake up in the morning feeling un-refreshed. 

In addition to snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep apnea can cause memory loss, morning headaches, irritability, depression, decreased sex drive and impaired concentration. Sleep apnea patients have a much higher risk of stroke and heart problems, such as heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension. Sleep apnea patients are also more likely to be involved in an accident at the workplace or while driving.

Sleep apnea patient are often older, obese and have thick necks, but men and women of any age or body type can have sleep apnea. The sleep disorder progressively worsens with age and weight gain. Listed below are some common signs of sleep apnea:

• Unintentionally falling asleep during the day
• General daytime sleepiness
• Un-refreshed sleep
• Fatigue
• Insomnia
• Waking from sleep with a choking sound or gasping for breath
• Loud snoring

Treatment of OSA can frequently involve a trained dental sleep specialist using a variety of techniques. CROWNS & BRIDGES
Crowns and bridges are used to restore and enhance teeth that are damaged, or to replace missing teeth. A crown, also referred to as a cap, is used to entirely cover a damaged tooth. A crown not only strengthens a tooth, but it can dramatically improve a tooth's appearance, shape and alignment.

Crowns may be used to:

• Replace a large filling when there is little tooth structure remaining
• Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
• Restore a fractured tooth
• Attach a bridge
• Cover a dental implant
• Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
• Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment

A bridge is an ideal method to fill the space created by missing teeth. A bridge is one or more artificial teeth that are cemented into place using the teeth on either side for support, hence the name. This is an option for filling the space created by a missing tooth. A bridge replaces the missing tooth, both functionally and cosmetically. Bridge work is as much an art as it is an exact science. The materials used may be gold alloys, porcelain bonded to metal alloy, or all ceramic material made to match your natural tooth color. The choice of material depends on requirements for strength, wear, and/or esthetics.

TOOTH COLORED FILLINGS
A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. If you have a tooth that requires a filling, the dentist will first remove the decayed tooth material, clean the affected area, and then fill the cleaned out cavity with a filling material. A filling also helps prevent further decay by closing off any cracks or spaces where bacteria can enter.

The material of choice, resin or porcelain/ceramic will depend on each individual situation. This will depend on the extent of repair, how much of the tooth requires restoring and cost. Each of the filling materials is briefly explained below:

• Composite resins are a directly placed filling material that is matched exactly to the color of your teeth. They are typically used in more conservative situations.
• Porcelain fillings called inlays, onlays or 3/4 crowns are custom made in the office while you wait with CEREC technology or in certain circumstances in a lab by a master ceramist. They are bonded to your tooth and are used when larger portions of the tooth requires restoring. They provide increased durability, strength and stain resistance. Either options provides a natural long lasting result.

DENTAL IMPLANTS
A dental implant is an ideal and preferred way to restore a single missing tooth. A dental implant is an artificial root that is implanted into the jaw. Once the implant has been placed and has integrated with the bone, a replacement tooth/bridge is placed on top. They look and function as your natural teeth.

Implants provide superior benefits to other tooth replacement options:

1. They can last a lifetime.
2. They are independent of adjacent teeth meaning that neighboring teeth do not require prepping as is the case with bridges.

DENTURES (WITH AND WITHOUT IMPLANTS)
A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. There are two types of dentures available, partial and complete dentures. Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain, while complete dentures are used to completely replace all teeth. Dentures are made to resemble your natural teeth so there should be no noticeable change to your appearance. In fact, dentures will even improve your smile!

Complete Dentures - This method is used to restore your smile and function if all your teeth have been lost. The dentures are custom created to resemble natural teeth and are positioned into a patients mouth to take the place of where the natural teeth used to be. Complete dentures are removable and may require adjustments in order to create a proper fit with the gums and mouth.

Partial Dentures - A removable partial denture is a device used when one or more natural teeth still remain in the upper or lower jaw. They usually consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base which is held in place in the mouth.

Denture Implants - Implants are frequently used in conjunction with complete and partial dentures. Supporting dentures with implants greatly increases stability and retention. This is a very popular option because it eliminates those potentially embarrassing or uncomfortable situations where a denture may dislodge when eating or speaking.

Mini Dental Implants are a more economical option if implants are desired. They are placed in our office and the denture can usually be fitted that day for immediate stability.

Invisalign

INVISALIGN
The Invisalign treatment consists of a series of clear, custom fit, removable mouth trays that apply a controlled amount of force to your teeth, forcing them to shift. The system provides the same beautiful results as traditional braces, but since the trays are made of clear plastic, they are virtually invisible. In addition, because Invisalign trays are removable, they can be taken out while eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.

The Invisalign System works by creating of series of trays/aligners that will move your teeth gradually until the end result is achieved. At the end of each two-week period, you will switch trays. Throughout the process, you will visit your dentist every six weeks to ensure treatment is progressing as planned. Once your treatment is complete, you will likely wear a clear retainer to ensure your new smile stays in place.

LASER SCULPTING
Laser dentistry is the latest advancement in dental technology, treating a wide range of dental and cosmetic problems from cavities to gum disease to teeth whitening. The lasers we use in laser dentistry at our practice are an alternative to the common hand-held scalpel, drills, or other tools. These lasers direct an invisible energy beam onto problem areas and allow us to efficiently treat decayed teeth, enamel, and gums. The benefit of laser dentistry is that they minimize the pain most often associated with dental procedures, meaning more comfort for our patients. Clinical studies show that approximately 96% of all patients require no anesthesia when lasers are being used during dental treatments. Dental lasers have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and are safe for both adults and children.

Soft Tissue Laser
Soft tissue lasers are used to safely remove soft tissue, such as excess gum tissue. The soft tissue laser can also be employed to destroy bacteria in gum pockets, preventing infection and allowing the tissue to return to a healthy state. The soft tissue laser enables the dentist to treat our patients with extreme accuracy and eliminates the need for most stitches.

Hard Tissue Dental Laser
Hard tissue lasers are used to remove old fillings, repair cavities, and prepare teeth for bonding. As with soft tissue lasers, they dramatically minimize discomfort and allow the dentist to treat teeth with more precision.

MIGRAINES / CHRONIC HEADACHES / TMD TREATMENT
Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is a condition involving the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ). TMD may involve multiple signs and symptoms which can include popping/clicking of the jaw joint, pain when chewing, limited range of motion, headache, earache and discomfort in the muscles of the head and neck. One symptom alone does not mean a diagnosis of TMD, however if left untreated can result in further damage to the jaw joint potentially causing an arthritic process. These signs and symptoms can be caused by the misalignment of teeth, trauma, excessive muscle strain/tension and parafunction (clenching/grinding).

Chronic Headache Syndrome is a process whereby someone constantly has some degree of headache. These headaches typically are first noticed when one wakes up in the morning and usually do not intensify to migraine levels. Low grade discomfort is also usually felt in the back of the neck.

Migraines are an extremely intense and often debilitating headache. They may be caused by vascular conditions in the brain often triggered by hyperactive muscle activity or by fluctuating hormone levels. The intensity and frequency varies with each individual as does treatment success.
