One of the sadder things that we have to say to our patients
is "Your teeth are fine, but your gums have to come out."
Brushing and flossing usually prevents cavities, but if your susceptible,
gum disease can creep up on you.
After the recent continuing education program in
Baltimore that our staff attended, we have learned and implemented new
techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the gums and supporting
bone around the teeth. Left unchecked, periodontal disease will
result in tooth loosening, bleeding gums, shifting teeth and tooth loss.
If you have any of these symptoms, see a dentist (preferably us)
immediately. Periodontal disease has recently been linked with
increased risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes and low birth weight
babies, so it takes on a greater importance then just keeping your
teeth. The advanced techniques we employ have allowed us to treat 90%
of our patients with Periodontal disease non-surgically! Through
carefull cleanings and the use of local antibiotics, we can almost
always avoid the need for costly periodontal surgery. |
