If
you're expecting or planning to be, see a dentist. Surges of
estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy make gums more susceptible to
plaque and bacteria, which can cause them to swell.
Red, tender, bleeding gums signal
gingivitis. Left untreated, it could progress
to serious gum disease: periodontitis. Studies show that this serious
form of gum disease can boost your risk of having a premature or low
birth weight baby.
Your plan of attack: Floss
diligently. Schedule a dental checkup in your first trimester.
And if morning sickness makes brushing a turnoff, rinse with an
anti-plaque mouthwash or use a milder baking soda toothpaste.
