Though we may not know it, our teeth bear the brunt of stress as we
grind away - day after day.
The first signs of grinding, or bruxism,
can be a dull headache or a sore jaw. Further symptoms could be painful,
loose or noticeably worn teeth, or what appears to be notches or wear
lines along the necks of the teeth.
That's because severe tooth grinding
literally grinds away parts of the teeth, leaving the patient with
fractured tooth enamel, chipped, or even broken teeth.
Some of the contributing factors may be
stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, an abnormal bite, or crooked or
missing teeth. If stress is the major cause, you need to find a way to
relax.
Physical therapy, muscle relaxants, or even counseling may help
reduce tension.
We successfully treat this condition over 90% of the time with a
small, safe, simple device called an NTI Appliance. We may not be able
to eliminate all stress, but we can certainly help control its effects.
